Joy Co-operative Credit Union Limited set out to become leading financial institution in North Tongu District and beyond, providing financial services to reduce poverty and increase wealth of members. People who are professionals and proactive, state of the art technology, exceptional corporate governance standards, good knowledge of the local market, and above all, a Member-Centric culture.
Joy Co-operative Credit Union Limited started as workplace Credit Union in the year 2002/2003 at Juapong Textile Ltd. now known as Volta Star Textile Ltd. (VSTL) through the instrumentality of the late Mr. Thomas Amenorhu because he was one of the supervisors at one of the units of the factory. The Union was then called JTL Workers Credit Union Limited and membership was opened only to the workers of the factory.
The founders worked tirelessly and closely with the first Manager of the Union, Mr. Anthony Tsigbey, the cashier, Mr. David Asamani and the then Chapter Manager, Mr. Godfred Adanuti to set the right tone for the smooth take off of the Credit Union at the factory premises at Juapong.
From then, the Union was on track until in the year 2005 when the JTL Textile Limited had experienced extraordinary retrenchment of workers forcing majority of the members to withdraw their membership since they decided to relocate to new places to look for greener pastures for survival.
Some of the pioneers, especially the late Mr. Thomas Amenorhu were not discouraged at all by the disheartening development that happened at the time, but they quickly considered the idea to relocate the Union to Juapong township located opposite the RC Road and made it a community based one where membership was open to every person in the year 2005/2006. This move resulted to the conversion of the name to Teachers and Community Credit Union Limited. CUA through Mr. Adanuti was supportive in terms of funds and expertise during this time.
In September 2006, Madam Gertrude Gbakah was employed as a cashier, and this moved the staff strength to three (3). With intensive education engaged in Juapong Township and its environs by the late Mr. Thomas Amenorhu and the staff, the Union started to improve in membership. The Union continued to progress with the aggressive membership drive.
In early 2007, Mr. Anthony Tsigbey officially resigned his post and Mr. Freeman Adzah was hired and took over that position in that very year. The Union was under the oversight of the late Mr. Amenorhu and the then Chapter Manager, Mr. Adanuti until 2008.
In 2008, CUA saw it necessary for the Union to have an oversight body, so it decided to form an interim three (3) member Board of Directors which the late Mr. Thomas Amenorhu, the Chairman, the late Mr. Oscar Dorsoo, the Secretary and Madam Pauline Boafo, the Treasurer. Mr David Asamani officially resigned that year. The interim Board of Directors and the entire staff with their dynamism were persistent in championing the vision and mission of the union until 2010.
During 2010, the Union held the first Annual General Meeting and accounted to the membership its stewardship reports. The first substantive Board of Directors and Committee members were elected by the members at this meeting. These were: Board of Directors; Mr. Samuel Agbenyo-Chairman, the late Mr. Thomas Amenorhu-Vice Chairman, Madam Pauline Boafo-Treasurer, the late Mr. Oscar Dorsoo-Secretary, and Madam Matilda Dosoo-Assistant Secretary. Supervisory Committee; Mr. Franklin Sarkodie-Chairman, Mr. John Ahiamale-Secretary and Madam Rukaya MohammedMember.
